We are a nonprofit, federally qualified health center serving more than 18,000 people annually. We provide 20 different services at 16 locations throughout Los Angeles County, including LGBTQ+ focused primary medical care, dental and behavioral health services and HIV specialty care; PrEP counseling and management; health education and HIV prevention; and STD screening and treatment.
For people living with HIV, we offer L.A. County’s largest housing support program; benefits counseling; home healthcare; and the Vance North Necessities of Life Program food pantries, the largest program of its kind in the United States; among several other critically needed services. Additionally, we are leaders in advocating for policy and legislation that positively impacts the LGBTQ+ and HIV communities and conduct community-based research on issues affecting the communities we serve.

A leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS for over 35 years, APLA Health (“APLA”) is seeking a dynamic leader to be its new Site Medical Director of the Charles Drew University/Martin Luther King Health Center (“CDU/MLK”). This new state-of-the-art facility represents APLA Health’s largest financial investment in a health center facility to date and will focus on removing the many health disparities that disproportionately affect communities of color and LGBTQ individuals. Although CDU/MLK Health Center will serve anyone within their scope, the focus of APLA’s mission is to serve low income members of the LGBTQ Community as well as persons living with and affected by HIV.
Under the direction of the APLA Health Chief Medical Officer, this newly created Medical Director role provides administrative oversight of the medical and educational components of CDU/MLK. As APLA Health looks to build out its new site, this position offers the right entrepreneurial leader the chance to shape programming and services including working with key internal and external stakeholders to take the mission out into the community in order to build a strong client base. As the clinic grows, the new Medical Director will partner with the Medical College to provide residencies and other education opportunities for medical students.

Clinical Leadership with Entrepreneurial Capabilities
Working with the Chief Medical Officer and in collaboration with the Nursing Director and other departments, the Site Medical Director will have strong clinical skills and deep experience as a leader of a patient-centered health care team. This individual will be confident in defining program and process objectives, and allocating human, technological, and fiscal resources to accomplish site goals including developing and implementing clinical protocols and quality improvement plans. Possessing an understanding of and passion for building a clinic from the ground up, this entrepreneurial leader will be eager to build out medical programming and establish a strong patient base. The Site Medical Director will know how to work cross-functionally to connect patients with the support and ancillary services needed to achieve whole-person health.
Savvy Relationship Builder
The Site Medical Director will be a strong relationship builder who has the skills and sensitivity needed to partner with a wide range of external stakeholders, including social services, outreach workers, behavioral and mental health workers, and food services, in order to meet the holistic needs of APLA Health’s patient population. Humble and diplomatic, the Site Medical Director will be capable of navigating a complex political environment and collaborating effectively in furtherance of APLA Health’s mission. This individual must have a strong cultural competence in dealing with racially, ethnically, culturally and sexually diverse populations including LGBTQ persons.
This analytical leader will have a thorough understanding of how to harness the power of data to benefit population health. The Site Medical Director will understand federal clinical quality metrics and will be eager to use these metrics for quality improvement across clinical operations. Possessing an understanding and appreciation of EHR applications, this individual will make use of these applications in analysis, planning, prioritizing, and evaluating results of clinical services and programming.

The Site Medical Director plans and directs all aspects of CDU/MLK’s medical policies and programs. The Site Medical Director will also ensure that the Health Center operates in a manner consistent with the community standards of medical practices and in coordination with our local partners, namely the OASIS HIV Clinic and Charles Drew University. Responsibilities include:
In conjunction with the APLA Health & Wellness Chief Medical Officer, and other senior management, responsible for full compliance with FQHC grant requirements.
Plans, directs, supervises, coordinates and evaluates all medical activities at the CDU/MLK Health Center.
Works under the Chief Medical Officer and in collaboration with the APLA Health Nursing Director, Quality/Compliance/Risk/UM Department and other clinical staff to develop, establish and implement clinical protocols, clinical policies and procedures and quality assurance/improvement plans.
Works in collaboration with other clinic leaders (may include the clinic director, nursing leadership, medical assistant leadership and others) to promote effective clinic processes.
Responsible for all hiring decisions relating to clinical medical staff. As well as directly supervises, coordinates and evaluates their work.
Represents the medical provider staff of CDU/MLK to APLA Health senior management.
Delivers primary care medical services, including, but not limited to, management of all medical problems and health maintenance within the scope of an adult primary care physician.
Delivers STD diagnosis and treatment as well as HIV-prevention services in collaboration with community partners.
Coordinates with Charles Drew University to assist with medical resident education.
Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient’s clinical problems and health care needs.
Records all findings and formulates an assessment based on the patient’s condition.
Establishes treatment plans, administers, furnishes, or recommends medications.
Participates in establishing and implementing standards of medical service and advises APLA’s Chief Medical Officer on medical and administrative questions and policies as they relate to medical practices.
Assures the development of an annual quality assurance plan that includes documentation of quality indicators and sound program assessment methodologies.
Directs and implements quality assurance assessments.
Assures the integrity of electronic medical records in accordance with state and federal laws governing the creation, retention, and destruction of medical records related to client care.
Oversees professional development (CME, etc.) for medical providers at the CDU/MLK
Develops and monitors the clinical portion of the CDU/MLK budget.
Assumes primary responsibility for building the primary care client base.
This will position will consist of approximately 80% direct patient care and 20% administrative tasks.
Training and Experience
Possession of a Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or D.O.) Degree and a valid license to practice medicine issued by the California Medical Board with no pending or previous disciplinary action from any state licensing entity.
Board certification or eligibility in a primary care specialty (Internal Medicine or Family Medicine); current DEA license, ACLS and BLS certification.
Clinical experience in a Federally Qualified Health Center
Experience working with electronic health records, preferably eClinicalWorks, required.
